Although you claimed that you are the expert on CITES the fact is that you are not. You simply know what is required for your business and nothing else.
Take my advice. Please read through this thread. I think you will agree with me when I say what we both know. It is time Mary for you to take a break from this board.

Another post, another ridiculous piece of commentary. Wayne, first off I did not ever claim to be an expert on CITES. Not once. Yes, I know what is required for the MO industry and guess what? THAT'S THE SUBJECT!!!! Not Appendix I animals and not fish that are on CITES but not part of the MO trade. I probably am a little more obnoxious toward you than I am others. Reason being is that I wasted hours and hours of my personal time on the phone trying to educate you and this is what has come of it. You are also the reason that I took all of my cyanide information off of Reefsource. Frankly, you make me ill and if it shows through then oh well. You don't have a lot (if any) support, Wayne. That should tell you something.

Wayne- you said earlier that you brought in fish from Taiwan. What were the Taiwan government's rules on export by hobbyists?

Mary,
I wanna know how he filled out the customs declaration card where it asks if you are bringing back any animals, fruits or vegetables.
US Fish and Wildlife don't allow personal imports of wildlife across borders.
Theres a word for bringing in undeclared stuff.

None according to the LFS in Taipei. The day before I bought the fish they were doing an order for someone else. I was really impressed with the care they took in packing the fish which gave me confidence that the fish would survive the trip which was my main concern.

At Chang Kai Chek airport the officials inspected the bags and beamed with pride when they saw the fish and I complemented them on having the best reefs in the world.

I did not fly back via the US as the best airport for travel to Asia from North America is Vancouver.

I declared the fish and was asked to proceed to the 'animal' wicket. The officers inspected the fish and sent me on my way.

No. Steve I always declare anything I purchase abroad or bring into another country. Otherwise I would be breaking the law.

Mary, I have brought back marine fish from the Philippines (three times) (once to Canada and twice to the USA). I had the exporter from whom I obtained the fish obtain the export permit by paying a fee to BFAR. I believe that the last time the exporter in PI also dealt with a broker in PI. I believe there was also a fee charged by the airport (that I paid). On entering the US I took the box of fish through customs (at LAX) and had them transferred to the connecting flight. There was no hassle that I can remember with US customs. There was a US declaration form. It is not hard to bring back fish as excess baggage into the USA. Of course, none of the fish were threatened or endangered.

Companies importing fish generally deal with customs inspection and payment of brokerage fees. Hence, there are a limited number of cities through which fish can be imported. Bringing fish in as excess baggage (e.g. 1 box) does not require a U.S. broker.

Steve, You implied that wildlife (and presumably) fish can not be imported by a hobbyist as excess baggage. Are you stating that the rules changed post 9/11? If so, how has it changed?

I know that companies that shipped within the U.S. can only do so now, if they had a history of having done so prior to 9/11. But, what changes happened with the excess baggage scenario?

If wildlife is called in...
they may confiscate all...and often do at the border of Mexico.
If customs does not bring it to the attention of wildlife and if customs raises no fuss...then your're in.
Officially who knows. I just know they are more sensitive now.
