I've had my tank running for about 2 years and up to this day I have still had no success with zoos. Honestly, what is going on here? I have no problems keeping any of the other corals in my tank which are much harder than zoos. I've been told that my water is too clean, which is frustrating to me. I've tried them in spots all over my tank. Low medium high light, low medium high flow. Can someone tell me why I can't keep zoos?! This is driving me nuts.

damn dude that is odd bro cause i got zoos coming out of the water ! and this tank i have now is 8mnths old, some do say that zoos require a bit of water grit !! i think u should lay back on water changes and see how that works for you , cause i do mine every 2 weeks rather than every week

easy pull a few of the rocks out and do a fresh water dip while shaking the rocks in the freshwater and they will fall off, also if your getting temp flux's you might have zoa pox

I think the "too clean" point comes into play with people having issues with growth, not being able to keep zoas. I would def try to dip some of the colonies that you can take out and see if you have nudis. You also might be able to see their eggs on some of the closed polyps. white eggs in a spiral.

Try to post a few pictures of them if you can. Somebody might be able to spot something for you

All zoos are on the bottom of the tank now. a few heads are open. I will check at night with a flashlight to see if anything is crawling around. I will also do a freshwater dip if theres not more of a change in the next week. Thanks for all the help everyone. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

I'm curious to hear more about the "too clean" notion. Does that have any validity?

I don't know what's considered very clean. After I upgraded my CPR BP II to a Super Reef Octopus LX1000S on a 29G. (And by the way, this skimmer is huge.)

The red coral mushrooms are in a shriveled state. Before that they were all opened up. I have purple, green, and a few single various mushrooms including 1 big hairy mushroom and a few smaller ones that are expanding and opening so i don't know why they're the only ones affected. I have some zoas are the bottom of the tank and they are opened.

I'm still battling the GHA which is dwindling from the color change to dull and the surface is still has a film.

I don't personally think water can be too clean for zoanthids, they're pretty hardy for corals (coralimorphs to be exact:)). Even people running ULNS systems keep zoanthids with success, so it's not an issue. While I'm not expert zoanthid keeper, my experience is that some morphs are harder to keep than others and amount of light plays role in their growth, too. For example, pink&gold palythosa looks much better and grow quicker if you put the close to the light source, much like sps like. However, most zoas and palys don't like that high levels of light, they grow smaller and sometimes shrink. I also found that some specimens of thesame morph can be hardier than others. I remember getting a darth maul frag from a member here too, it grown for me nicely and it suddenly died in a matter of days. What was interesting is that same thing happen to him and at least two other people that he gave it to. I received another frag from him a few weeks later (from a different colony) and I have no problems with it so far, it grows nicely and multiplies quickly. I feed my zoas oyster feast and reef pearl sometimes and I see them interested in this kind of food (they open their mouths wider when I feed them) but I can't be 100% sure it helps with their growth.
I think there's much more to learn about zoanthids care...

to answer your question on too clean of water, yes it can be, i highly doubt your tank is at that stage though, depending on where the zoa's were collected from it is a possibility, i put a article on here somewhere in reguards to this.
