I have read alot that rowaphos is the best phosphate removal product. Only problem is that it is so expensive. Does anyone recommend any other product I can buy as a substitute?

The next popular item would probably be phosban.

you can buy a cheaper GFO but it will cost you the same in the long run because most of the other GFO out there do not last as long so you will be swapping out media more often. just my opinion

I do a 5 Gallon water change every 2 weeks approx. The first 2 week water change gets a change of the chemipure elite. the second water change gets a PB media change if I use it because my chemipure elite has phos media in it.

GFO from Bulk Reef Supply is really the way to go. I have never noticed a difference between any of the different manufacturers of the media (rowa, phosban, BRS, etc). I tend to think that these guys are all getting it from the same source and just packaging/pricing it differently. If people are telling you they think one is better than the other, I would honestly like to know how they came to that conclusion, as it is pretty hard to test accurately for phosphates in the first place, and with all the other variables in your tank, it would be a PITA to isolate the effects of the GFO.

Anyway, to answer your question, Bulk Reef Supply has info on their site as to which version of their media to use (granules vs. pellets). If I recall correctly, one will produce less dust and is better suited to being run in a reactor.

The GFO from Bulk reef supply is the closest product to Rowa as far as performance. i used the high capacity GFO from BRS and it is more $ than Rowa and requires a little more rinsing.

I change my GFO as my system dictates, once the output of your reactor is showing PO4 on your test, then the media is exhausted and needs to be replaced. i have been averaging 2 months on mine but i have a large reactor so i use more media.
