I personally would recommend you to follow the schedule of LIRA because they usaully run it with Altantis Aquairum staff who knows what to keep what to let them back to the ocean.

No offense but I'd rather do things on my own if I can or with a group of people from here. Plus I wouldn't want to keep much anyways, I'm more interested on what I'll find rather than what I'll actually bring back home.

You might want to look into what regulations are in effect for what species before you go out on your own. Fish and Wildlife are mostly nice guys in my experience but they take their job very seriously and fines can rack up quickly. They are out there looking for people more than you think (especially since NY state needs the ticket revenue badly).

You think they would give me problems even if I just collected a few things for myself? I thought it was only bad if you collected in large quantities where you would go and sell your catch.

I am not familiar with the attitude of the Fish and Wild Life and people in Long Island but in parts of upstate NY, they are very strict. Even one trout of the wrong color or size, both the Fish and Wild Life or the DEP can fine you.

At least one time in Long Island the authority did wait at the pier to ask what are we collecting. We have grass shrimps. They did not bother us with those. I did not pay attention to what dept. they come from.

It doesn't matter if you take one or one thousand illegal is illegal and some are far more illegal than others. I've had direct dealings with Fish and Wildlife identifying and holding animals temporarily until they could take them back for evidence. They monitor the stores regularly in both uniform and plain clothes looking for fish that shouldn't be there. They also know where the best collection spots are and station officers there sometimes in uniform sometimes not. I would either go with a group that knows what shouldn't be collected or contact Fish and Wildlife and ask, they will point you in the right direction for information.

That seems like a good suggestion.

The article was interesting to me because of how the fish traveled all the way to New York in warm patches of water, not so much the prospect of going out and catching them myself. It makes me wonder what this means for the reef ecosystem in the future...

What reef ecosystem of the future?

The tropicals that end up here die eventually due to the colder water as the season ends, or they get eaten by the local fish.

I hate to be a downer, but about that bucket full of butterflys...very, very few that are caught by reefers up here actually live to adulthood. I have spoken to countless people who have caught them and 99% of the time they say..I lost them, even when they were doing great for a number of months.
