Jackson, have you looked at the Ford Escape Hybrid 32 city I believe with 42 hway. Its a highly recommended car, the only problem is that the resale value may be crappy on it. And its about the same size are your crv depending on the model year. dont bother with flexfuel because it doesnt give you better gas mileage and there are no stations in the area of a 100 mile radius of manhattan that has pure ethanol that the flex can handle. I honestly would stay away from european vehicles even though I own one because if your like to do repairs yourself you will need a special tool for almost everything. If your looking at a hybrid car wait until 2011 when all of of todays developmental technology starts hitting the showrooms.

That's not true, I know of two local valeros that sell e85. Although cheaper than 87 it does have a higher burn rate so you do end up using more.

But hey you would be saving the environment:duh: what does it matter that it takes $3 of fossil fuel to make $1 of flex:shhh:

Warren I haven't made a decision yet, been laid up since my knee surgery. Soon though :)

George, I have to look into that Escape Hybrid. Honestly though I am not much of a fan of American styling. Looks like some of the American vehicles were beaten with the ugly stick. Seriously, what were they thinking when they made THIS. :)
As for the tool and repairs on European cars I am not worried. I will only be leasing a vehicle for 2 years. Warranty pretty much covers anything major.

Rich,
Scrap the mpg :D

The local Jeep dealer up here is offering 40% off msrp on a loaded Commander. That's $18k off a $45k vehicle.
I was dead set on a '09 Pilot touring but they only offered $4k off msrp if you don't take the 1.9 financing. $18k off msrp sure sounds tempting!

Depending on the model year, yes you could do better but the hybrid is in a different class compared to their non-hybrid models. I also dont think it was that bad looking but compared to the rest of what the Ford design team has been creating the Escape looks like a Aston Martin. They kinda shot their load with the retro Mustang and called in the rest of the designs. Outside of the hybrid idea I recommend the Volvo SUV's if you dont mind stepping into a bigger car then the CRV. If you want to keep in the same size and be mindful of the resale then I completely agree with NYReefNOOB on the Rav4 or the Acura. Also do your research on the leasing. Some manufactors have or will be pulling their subsidized leasing programs out of some states, GMAC and I beleive Chrysler Financial have done so already in Canada, it may hit the U.S. in a short amount of time with other financial instituions following suit, something to think about.

As for E85, a study by Stanford found that E85 would increase health risk with respect to ozone and carcinogens by about 4%, as compared to gasoline, in the United States due to acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, which are two of the four major carcinogens found in E85 and gasoline emissions. Thus making it no better then gasoline outside of it being a renewable source. So I guess enjoy your corn and cancer, in whatever form it may be. Don't put the "planet killer" crown of thorns on me just because I dont agree with your view on E85. I am for a renewable energy source but it needs major improvements before I personally can start backing it. Lets not forget its still in its infancy, it still needs some advancements and additional studies to be made.

Rich, I'm no expert but I was in the industry selling cars for nearly 15 yrs, as a salesperson and GSM for masarati, Alpha, BMW, Nissan, Mazda, Ford. My opinion, before you decide on a lease or a conventional purchase find what will make you happy. Do your on research, and compare the features and benefits. Then do a comparison on a lease vs. a buy. Lease you have options!! A conventional Buy, you have an obligation! J. Paul Getty, said If it appreciates..Buy it.
If it depreciates...Lease it.

I was about to get the acura RDX but when the time came to sign the papers they low-balled me on the trade in value. I walked.
I actually leased a subaru forester XT. This was the only car company that offered me a decent lease price. I was getting ridiculous prices from VW, honda/acura, and even ford!
For example a $24,000 jetta sportwagon was $445 per month (taxes rolled in) + 1200 total out of pocket. Insanity for such a cheap car. All the other dealers I went to gave me similiar prices on other $hitty cars...lol

This is a pic from Subaru of the same car that I leased. Mine is in dark grey though. First impression is that it is fast for an SUV. It does 0-60 in about 6 secs. I can't really tell you anything else yet...too soon. I can't stand that stupid subaru logo though. It reminds me of a kia :)

Whatever car you want see if the deaer or leasing company you will use can get you a deal on a demo model. I am not a expert but I think this can only work for a lease though. I got a fuly loaded Rang Rover last monh or $815.00 a month 24 month lease 12k miles a year. The catch... The car was used for a little less than a year by an employee of the dealership. It came with 6K miles big deal! Looks 100% brand new! My friend pays over $1,200 for the same car on a longer lease term. If you can get a demo I say go for it.
