I agree 100%. The value a guy like Paul O'Neill brings to the table is sadly underated these days.

You are 100% right about a true "team player" like O'Neill. People are only worried about stats these days. I'd take Texeira over Manny any day of the week. He may not put up the same stats as Manny, but he's a team player and leader. He's also younger and has a much longer shelf life.

From www.si.com:

The Yankees are on the verge of signing Mark Teixeira, SI.com has learned, beating out the rival Red Sox for the free-agent slugger's services.
Terms of the proposed agreement for Teixeira, who hit .308 with 33 home runs and 121 RBIs in 2008, are unclear.
The final four teams in the race to sign Teixeira were the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals and Yankees.
The Red Sox threw a curveball late last week when owner John Henry announced they were no longer "going to be a factor'' following a meeting at Teixeira's Dallas-area house. But after a little while, it became clear that Henry only meant that they intended not to up their bid, not that they were pulling out of the derby entirely.
While Henry's team remained in the running, Angels owner Arte Moreno pulled out for real on Sunday, announcing they had given up the chase. Moreno had submitted a proposal believed to be for $160 million at the Winter Meetings and hadn't moved from that initial offer.
While there were rumors that the Severna Park, Md., product preferred to be on the East Coast, there never was any real evidence of that. He loved his time in Anaheim and continued to live in the Dallas area, so those suggestions may have been overplayed.
The Yankees remained in contact with the Teixeira camp, but after spending $243.5 million on star starting pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, they didn't appear anxious to be the market setter.

Yankees leaning to Hughes over Pettitte

Andy Pettitte | Yankees | Interested: Dodgers?

Now that the Yankees have landed first baseman Mark Teixeira, the odds of Andy Pettitte staying with the team next year are "55-45 against," a baseball official told the New York Daily News.

Instead, the official said, the Yankees may turn to Phil Hughes, who blew his chance in the rotation last year because of a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness, as a starter behind CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. Hughes is still considered one of the Yankees' best young players, and many in the organization are eager for him to have another shot.

"It's less likely" that Pettitte returns, the official told the Daily News. "Most (Yankee executives) are thinking of another direction."

The Daily News said the door is not closed on Pettitte, and there likely won't be any permanent decision by the Yankees on his future until the new year. A one-year, $10 million offer from the Yanks is still in effect.

i would welcome pettite back. but in all honesty UP HIS!! 1st when he was going through all of the steroid crap. we were the only team that gave him a contract. a little more then he was worth at the time IMHO. then he repays us with .500 record. all that for 16 mil a year. then he goes on record and says he will take less. well for a number 4 pitcher at best- do you really expect to pay more then 12 million a year? we offered him 10mil. no response. forget him. i love the idea of trading matsui for erik bedard as reported by peter gammons on espn radio. goodbye to pettite. i will always appreciate what he did for the yankees. but his time has passed. watch i bet he agrees with the mets or the dodgers for less then 16 mil a year like his agent demanded from the yankees. what a joke

I agree with Domboski. A rotation of CC, Wang, Burnett, Pettitte and Hughest is just wnat the Yanks need. And then in the bullpen you have Coke, Marte, Joba and Mariano.

That's solid!!
