I think this might be the main problem with this industry. Lack of organization and followthrough. People want to help, but there is no avenue to do so. Gresahm, wanna start an NPO?

Hey,
He doesn't even communicate with people who order 40 boxes and send him 3k sometimes.
Lost is the zone between exporter and NGO bureaucrat....this Indonesian daywalker is hard to understand.
A strange fish indeed.
I just sent him a letter and a shipment report.
Still incommunicado.
Oh well...soon.

sorry, couldn't resist; I love those guys!

ps, isn't it amazing we have guys/orgs like Ruwi's and Ferdie's who are doing things right, BUT, for a variety of reasons, are struggling......

Hey,

Let's all pitch in and send Naesco to Les!

I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to visit the village of Les.... It is a beautiful place and the so are the people.

I have very fond memories of Les village, except for the fact that one of the collectors, a leader in the area died collecting only 3 days after I was there. His name was Bolot. He left behind a wife and 3 children.

I bring this incident up again to remind us all that this is life threatening work for the collectors who make so little at it.... They so need our help to succeed!

It seems to me that perhaps more exposure, maybe in the form of presentations, streaming video, highlight pics of collectable species, coniuously emphasizing the "net-caught" factor, etc. from Les and/or other net-collecting villages could be used to raise awareness and promote sales for these fishers.....

just some thoughts...

Mark

Thanks for the offer but I won't go they will kill me.

Only if you killed a bunch of them first. You should try to learn about the country's your talking about, before jumping to such conclusions. They all aren't Muslums there, and the ones that are, practice a different version then the Jihadists for the most part ;) One lousy bomb scares you? Do you jump when a car back fires?

Get your head a shake. You have been watching too much CNN. I am not talking about Muslims. I have already stated that the Philippine people are the friendliest in the world. We Canadians don't discriminate against anyone.

However members of the cyanide cartel would do me in in a flash if they knew I was in the Phippines.

Not only is his paranoia of the cyanide cartel ridiculous, given they don't know who he is or what he looks like, but his claim that Canadians have eliminated discrimination from their society is a complete crock.
Imagine that.

Don't kid yourself, no one cares where you are, or who you are. You make no one scared, let alone mad enought to kill you

PS. NOW that was a joke and must not be construed as a terrorist threat .

And now for something completely different;
Aug. 13.06 : 13-foot Tentacle Found off Santa Cruz Coast
From KSBY:

A fisherman snags a rare catch in the Santa Barbara Channel, a tentacle belonging to a giant squid.
The 13-foot-long tentacle was found floating near Santa Cruz Island last week. Little is known about the species, it is only the fourth confirmed specimen ever found in Southern California.

"They are definitely present off our coast, they are probably not very common here and they probably live in deep water, this one here was caught near the Santa Cruz Basin, which is several thousand feet deep," said Eric Hochberg, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Curator.

The tentacle likely surfaced after the rest of the squid was eaten by a whale.

Only if you want to not see the real deal. If you announce it, they put on a mora mora (that the right word Steve?) show for you ;)

IIRC, He announced his last visit, so your answer is a whopping yes

Wayne,
As the only one here that has received bonafide death threats from some Philippine exporters [ matter of Manila police record] let me inform you that those days are past.
The exporters today smile more and they are protected by MACs mantle now and therefore off the hook.
They signed a letter of commitment which is of course as good as gold. They are playing ball with the "recycled paper" pushers and nowable to claim attempted compliance and good will.

So... you can land in Manila anytime you want.
As soon as you touch down you get a feeling that the Philippines is not owned by tropical fish dealers. In fact, its huge and populated by non-combatants. Most of whom are unaware of our little obssession with certain elements of their countries fishery management issues.

God forbid any Filipinos hit town and start to research our Three Mile Island, Love Canal, toxic dumps, Cuyahoga river catching fire, dearth of wildlife in massive regions of our land, wipe out of so much of the world international heritage old growth redwoods, daming of salmon rivers, invasive species introduced by enlightened aquaculture companies, Mcdonalds corporate policy on the environment type hype.... society.

Not a week goes by that some Filipino journalist doesn't arrive in America....safely.
I think you should go. Get a massage and relax.
Steve

Hello from Chicago
Where did you ever find that picture, I have the original in the family archives. That's Gramp's (Stretch) Lehman in is hey day, circa 1937 showing the down payment for the cheese factory they soon purchased.
Family lore states he spend his golden years out by Gresham and Steve.

Wayne,

I think Jenn is right - you are dangerous because in your zeal you will prolly do more harm than good.
I think your heart might be in the right place, but I think basing your jihad on juice based on your one experience is not the best of ideas. I think you are lacking a comprehensive idea of what is actually going on on a meta level and are just shooting from the hip. What you are doing may get results similar to the banning of boa's in SF, the MO leopard shark laws and things like the 'vincent bill'. People all thought those things were good ideas too, but without a comprehensive understanding of the different parts of the industry they ended up being ineffective money wasters that hurt more than helped.

Thales it was more than my experience in PI.
I read all the material which Mary Middlebrook had posted on her website.(now removed). I trusted her fully that the information she posted was accurate.
I have been a member of this forum since its inception and have read, asked questions and participated in most discussions on the subject of cyanide.
I have in the past purchased beautiful angels and tangs. The best of the bunch; the most brilliantly coloured only to have them die several months later for no apparent reason.
I have done everything I can to have industry understand that cyanide can no longer be accepted and they must choose a leader, and take steps to regulate their own industry.

I am done.

Dangerous! Me! Hardly!
The only persons who need to be afraid are those directly or indirectly involved in the cyanide fish trade.
They should not be afraid of me they should be afraid of the likely decisions made by their own government through the US Reef Task Force.
